Origin of Father’s Day

Father’s Day is not merely a holiday designed to promote the sale of greeting cards. It was not a part of the catholic tradition until the start of the 20th century. There are two separate stories about the origin of the Father’s Day celebration.

According to some narrations, the first Father’s Day was observed in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908. The idea was proposed by Grace Golden Clayton, whose father, along with 360 men, was killed in a mining disaster. The disaster left more than 1000 children without a father. Grace Golden Clayton suggested the service of commemoration to the minister of the local Methodist Church. But it never got official recognition.

As per other accounts, the first Father’s Day was observed in the Washington States on June 19, 1910. A woman, Sonora Smart Dodd, proposed the idea to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for the male parent when she heard the Mother’s Day sermon at Church. She felt a need for a day to talk about the male parent as fathers equally deserve acclaim, since all the recognition and celebration goes to the mother.

Her father, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was a widower. His wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He raised the six children himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her gratitude for all the hard work, sacrifices, and love that William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora Came up with the idea to celebrate a day to pay homage to him and other fathers. She suggested celebrating the day on June 5, her father’s birthday. But due to some issues, the day was finally celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

Father’s Day Essay

I love my dad and mom. My dad works very hard work to keep our family happy. He is always busy. I see him go to work in the morning and come back in the evening. When he comes back from work he plays with me and fixes my broken toys. He also helps mummy by serving food and picking up the plates after dinner. He tells me stories before I go to sleep.

On the days he doesn’t go to work he is usually busy getting things for the house. Many times he takes me to the mall where I go to play games. He makes sure I am playing in the garden and takes me to the beach. I hate Mondays because my father has to go back to work.

I love sitting on his back when he becomes a horse for me, but he is very bad at playing video games because he loses most of the time. I have to show him the tricks to win video games. I love spending time with my father.
