Essay for Your Favourite Game

My favourite game is cricket. It is a very popular game in India. Everyone in my family loves the game too. We all sit down to watch the game together whenever India is playing. The rules of the game are very simple. Two teams play the game. Each team has 11 players. In each team there is a captain, vice captain, batsmen, bowlers and a wicket keeper.

The game is played outdoors on a field. The field is usually round and about a minimum of 60 meters to a maximum of 80 meters from the centre. In the centre of the field there is a small rectangular patch of clay or very short grass that is called a pitch. Most of the action takes place on the pitch. The pitch is approximately 20 meters long. There are three wickets or stumps on either end of the pitch. There is a crease near the stumps. The bowler cannot cross the crease while bowling and the batsman can be run out if he leaves the crease during a ball.

There are two umpires on the field to check if the game is being played by the rules. Recently a third umpire was added. This umpire sits in the pavilion and keeps a check through use of technology like the television and microphones. In case a field umpire gives the wrong decision the third umpire can correct the decision.

Before the game starts a coin is thrown to let the captains choose whether they want to bat or field first. Whoever wins the toss is allowed to choose.

The team batting first sends two players to the pitch. Each batsman has a bat in hand. It is a flat wooden piece with a handle. The wood is usually willow. They have to hit the ball with the bat. The ball is made of cork, string and enclosed in leather. The bowler from the fielding team throws the ball. The bowler can bowl the ball as a spin or in speed. Each bowler can bowl only 6 balls. Six balls are called an over. If he crosses the crease while bowling, the ball will not be counted. If he balls in such a way that the ball goes over the batsman or falls too far from him, the ball will not be counted. Yet the other team will get a run. In some formats the other team gets only an extra ball, but the batsman will not be ‘out’ if he hits the ball into the fielding players hand.

The batsman have to accumulate runs. Each batsman can hit the ball bowled to him wherever he likes. If the ball goes out of the boundary directly without bouncing on the field then six runs are awarded to the batsman and his team. If the ball bounces anywhere before crossing the boundary it is counted as four runs. The batsmen can hit the ball and run between the wickets to collect runs. If while running, a fielding player throws the ball and hits the wicket (or throws it to another fielder near the wicket who can hit the wicket correctly) and the batsman has not reached the crease he will be given run out. If the batsman hits the ball and the ball is caught by the opposing team’s player before it bounces, then the batsman is out.

Other ways the batsman can be given out or be dismissed are when the wicket behind him is hit by the bowler when he bowls. Sometimes the batsman put their feet in front to defend themselves. If the ball hits the leg and it is found that the ball may have hit the wicket if the batsman’s leg wouldn’t have stopped it. In this case the batsman is dismissed as ‘leg before wicket’. It may also happen that the batsman may come out of the crease to hit the ball but miss it completely and the wicket keeper catches the ball and hits the stump. If the batsman is outside the crease he is considered dismissed. Once the batsman is dismissed another batsman takes his place. This happens till all the players in the batting team are dismissed.

In the test match format the fielding team has to dismiss all the batsmen after which the fielding team is given a chance to bat. In limited overs cricket like 20 overs in twenty20 cricket or 50 overs in one day cricket, once the limited overs are complete then the opposing (fielding) team comes to bat. Unless of course the batting team is dismissed completely.

When both the teams have played, that is bowled and batted, in the given number of overs, the team with the most number of runs on the board wins. That is also for test match except you don’t have limited overs but the match is played in five days. The teams either are dismissed or a captain declares an innings because he feels he has set a good target of runs on the board. In a test match there are two innings, but there may or may not be a winner since both teams may not be able to play a complete innings in the given five days.
