Present Continuous Tense

When we talk about Present Continuous Tense we use words that denote actions that are usually happening right now.

What I – the First Person – The speaker am doing right now.

For example if I am walking in the park and someone inquires about my whereabouts I will reply that : I am walking in the park. Notice that I am using an –ing word in the sentence with the helping verb ‘am‘ which also denotes present tense. In fact a continuous verb is an –ing verb and together with a helping verb (like ‘am’ in this case) of the present tense makes a Present Continuous Tense.

The above given examples are of First (1st) Person or the person who is speaking will say the sentences given above for himself.

Let Me Talk About What You Are Doing Right Now.

For sentences about the Second (2nd) Person or the person who is listening to the speaker, they will include ‘You Are…’ since the speaker will address the person listening to him as you and ‘You is…’ is wrong English. So for a person eating his breakfast the speaker will say “You are eating breakfast.”

Talking About a Person Who is Not the Speaker nor the Listener.

The speaker could be talking about another person, or thing to the listener. This person may or may not be present at the time of the conversation. The Third (3rd) Person is divided into three (3) categories. 1. Single or one Person and 2. More than one Person. For Single or one Person there is further breakdown about the person the speaker is talking about. The person being talked about may be a male and will be addressed as ‘he’. The person can be a female and will be address as ‘she’ or something else, maybe an animal or an object or an idea and will be addressed as ‘it’.

Examples:

Kohli (He) is batting for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Katrina (She) is acting in the film Zero.

The Washing Machine (It) is washing my clothes.

For more than one person or plural in 3rd person the subjects will be addressed as ‘they’. For example: They are going to Delhi this evening.
